Initially, Green did not like him and would rather spend his time in the worst of the neighborhoods. However, Benhey would go looking for him, and eventually, the two bonded. Benhey coached him into becoming an MMA fighter. He also adopted Green and became his foster father.

Bobby Green's foster father and coach, Jacob Benhey, also had a prison stint as a first-time offender. The father-son duo discussed this with Joe Rogan at The Joe Rogan Experience podcast. Benhey claimed that he was in a California prison where it was against the rules to talk, sit, or trade with a person of another race. However, he was unaware of this, which got him into trouble. He got into a fight with an inmate and choked him unconscious.

Then, he was transferred from county to state. He also had to end in a fight against two guys because some of his cellmates planned on attacking and killing him. However, he managed to take both of them out with his fighting skills.
