Joel Selwood is keeping himself incredibly busy after announcing his retirement from the AFL following the 2022 season.

Selwood walked away from the game after leading the Geelong Cats to premiership glory one more time as they toppled the Sydney Swans.

It was the fourth time the 34-year-old had ascended the peak in the AFL and was the perfect time for him to ride off into the sunset.

Instead of sitting back and taking some time to relax and enjoy retirement, Selwood has gone right back to work.

His first role however shocked many as he switched codes to join the Melbourne Storm as a leadership coach.

But now he’s appearing set to make another leap into a third sport with Cricket Australia likely to be the beneficiary.

Joel and partner Brit are heading off to Europe in the middle of the year with their baby boy, Joey, and it may just see the AFL great drop in during the Ashes series and pass on some knowledge.

“We’re gonna head overseas halfway through the year,” Selwood told 7 NEWS reporter Mitch Cleary.

“It’ll be when the guys are playing in the Ashes.

“Andrew McDonald’s a local Geelong boy and been in contact for a period of time.

“They’re probably in a similar position to where the Cats are.

“They’ve got a lot of guys who are coming towards the end of their career and maybe finding their way out the next couple of years.”

It was the Storm’s playing list and reputation as one of the best organisations in Australian sport that appealed to the former Cats skipper.

“It’s an organisation I’ve looked upon and watched on in envy with the work they’ve done in the 25-year history they’ve had.

“I’m going to work with their leaders that are coming through, they’ve obviously lost a handful of players to the Dolphins and now it’s time for this next group of leaders to come through.

“It was pretty appealing to me with the ages of these guys and the position that they were in as a club to join them and see how we go.

“It’s a very stable club and they’ve been fortunate with those people (Craig Bellamy, Cam Smith and Frank Ponissi).

Selwood will return to the Cats in an off-field role as an ambassador and connector of key Club stakeholders and Geelong Football Club Foundation, his first role in the AFL since hanging up the boots.

“Whilst Joel won’t be pulling on the boots in 2023, he won’t be lost to the club and we’re thrilled to continue to have the calibre of Joel within our team of all,” says Geelong CEO Steve Hocking.

“The next 12 months presents a unique and rich opportunity for Joel to learn the craft of off-field football administration, as he embraces new dawns and new opportunities post playing.

“We know Joel is an impressive leader and we believe he can continue to play an important role with the club in this new capacity.”
