Ernie attended Oceanside High School in Oceanside, New York, where he pursued his football, basketball, and baseball interests. Ernie was a member of the Omega Gamma Delta Fraternity at Oceanside.

Vandeweghe, on the other hand, acquired a liking for basketball and enrolled at Colgate University in 1945 to play. Ernie proclaimed his willingness to be drafted during the 1949 NDA conscription.

In the third round of the 1949 NBA Draft, he was chosen by the New York Knicks. He began his professional career as a guard/small forward for the New York Knicks. From 1956 until 1960, he played with the Knicks for six seasons.

He played in a few games with the knocks before leaving the NBA in 1956. Ernie Ten’s background as an Air Force physician distinguishes him from other basketball players. For a while, he was stationed in Germany.
